Are you looking for a better solution to missing teeth or loose dentures?
Dental implants with Mount Waverley Family Smiles could be a life-long solution to missing teeth.
What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a replica of your tooth designed to fit into the space where you have lost a tooth. A titanium screw is placed into the bone under your gum and then a natural-looking crown is placed on top. Dental implants look like natural teeth and are embedded into your mouth. This means no more loose partial dentures or unsightly gaps. Dental implants can replace one missing tooth or multiple and an implant-retained denture is an alternative to full dentures.
What is the dental implant process?
Step 1
We start with a consultation to discuss your individual case and assess if implants are the right solution for you. This will include dental xrays and scans to determine if implants are possible. Your implant dentist will discuss the whole process and detail the treatment plan including the costs, payment options and number of visits required. This is the perfect opportunity for you to discuss your needs and wishes.
Step 2
Prior to treatment, your gums will need to be in optimal condition so a thorough hygiene visit to establish gum health is essential. Just like teeth, dental implants also need excellent home care and regular professional care to avoid serious gum infections so your dentist will discuss how best to take care of your gums and implant.
Step 3
On the day of surgery, the implant is placed comfortably under local anaesthetic. A healing cap is placed onto the implant and it is left to heal for 3+ months. A temporary crown/plate is also fitted so you can smile and eat with confidence.
Step 4
The implant is tested to see that it has properly integrated with the bone and is stable. A mould is taken and a permanent crown is made to fit over the implant screw.
Step 5
Regular professional examination hygiene visits (twice yearly) are required to keep the gum healthy around the implant to avoid serious infections which could result in the implant becoming loose and failing.
What does a dental implant feel like?
Once the implant has healed and the final crown is in, your new ‘tooth’ should feel natural and comfortable.
After the initial surgery, the area may feel sore for 2-3 days and pain relief medication will be required, as necessary. Our team will give you advice and instructions on how to manage the discomfort and look after the area. As always, if you have any questions, please contact us.
What are implants made from?
The most common material dental implants are made from is titanium. The titanium alloy is a metal that is strong, light weight, corrosion-resistant and non-toxic. Zirconia is a metal free alternative used in some cases which is made of a white ceramic material. Your dentist will discuss the best option for your individual situation.
Bone grafts
During the initial assessment process, the dentist will evaluate if there is sufficient bone to hold an implant securely. In cases where there has been bone loss in the area (often after the tooth has been missing for some time), extra bone may need to be added to the area. The bone graft material is placed at the same time as the dental implant. Extra healing time may be required. Your dentist will discuss the specific process of your graft surgery including the additional costs involved.

Am I a good candidate for implants?
There are 2 major factors to consider if dental implants are the right solution. The first is enough bone to securely hold the implant in the jaw bone. Xrays and scans will determine this at the outset. If there is insufficient bone and a bone graft is not possible, you may have to consider other options such as a bridge or partial/denture. The second factor is maintenance. Just like a natural tooth, the gum and bone needs to be in optimal condition. You will need to commit to regular examinations, dental hygiene visits and effective home care to prevent serious infections from developing around the implant from a build up of bacterial plaque. Peri-implantitis is a major cause of failure in dental implants.
How long do dental implants last?
Take excellent care of your implants with good home care and regular dental visits and hygiene treatment, and they can last decades.
